This traditional Kholui box has been made by Dobrin Dmitriy. It features the legendary Bogatyr warrior known as Dobrynya Nikitich. He is known primarily for his dramatic battles with dragons. He saved the niece of Prince Vladimir, Zabava, and all people of the kingdom from the Dragon.
The painting within the scene is exceptional. The design is medieval and the colors are fascinating. Dobrynya is painted symbolically in light tones standing near the Orthodox sacred place marked by a small wooden construction with a burning candle inside. By means of this symbolic language the artist shows that Dobrynya embodies good. As a contrast, the three-headed Dragon is painted in dark tones surrounded with clouds of dust.
Gray and green tones predominate here. The artist makes excellent use of elaborate gold and aluminum contouring throughout the composition. Dobrynya's chain armor, the architecture, and each scale on the Dragon's body shines with gold.
The scene is framed with gold beads. The sides of the box are decorated with elaborate gold ornamentation.
The box is constructed using quality paper-mache. The exterior of the piece is covered with black lacquer while the interior is painted with red lacquer. A hinge is fastened from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The artist has written Kholui, the title "Dobrynya and the Dragon", the year of 2005 and his name at the bottom of the composition in gold paints.
