Description: This traditional Kholui box has been painted by Brylyonkova A. Here she has chosen to depict a scene from Hans Christian Andersen's popular fairy tale "The Snow Queen". This tale tells about adventures of a little, but very brave girl Gerda. Her friend Kay has been kidnapped by the Snow Queen and she sets out in search of him.
The box shows the key episodes from the tale. The upper part of the composition features the Snow Queen kidnapping Kay, and carrying him to her ice kingdom. In the center we can see the Little Robber Girl and her mother. The Robber Girl released her reindeer, to help Gerda to get to the Snow Queen's palace. From the left of this scene we can see Gerda riding the reindeer, and crossing the boundless expanses of the Lapland. From the right of the central scene Gerda embraces her dear Kay inside the Snow Queen's ice palace. Her hot tears melt the ice in Kay's heart and wash out pieces of the evil mirror from his eyes. Now Kay is saved, now he is a kind boy again. Only true love can make wonders!
Cool tones of blue suitable for depiction of a winter scene dominate the composition. Gold paint is mostly used to detail the sled and the carriage painted behind the Robber Girl's mother. Swirls of white paints create the illusion of swirling snow, giving the composition a dynamic quality.
The composition is framed with gold beads, whereas the box's sides are decorated with intricate and very beautiful gold and aluminum ornamentation.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer while the interior is covered with red velvety material. The box rest on four legs, and its lid is hinged from the top. The artist has written her name, the title, and the village name of Kholui at the bottom of the composition in gold paints.
