This box is a creation of Larisa Poturaiko who is one of the most gifted Kholuy artists. Its subject is based on Lewis Carroll's classic tale "Alice in Wonderland". The Hare, the Hat, the Cheshire Cat, Alice and the Dormouse sit at the table. At this moment the Hat tells Alice that the Time has taken offence and stopped; and now it will be always 5 o'clock. It is the time of afternoon snack in England, when Englishmen usually drink tea.
The palette incorporates a great deal of tones, while keeping greens, pinks and browns in important positions. Poturaiko uses aluminum and gold paints to fill in and outline details with a delicate touch. This builds radiance and texture, both at the same time.
The scene is framed with a wide gold line, whereas the box's sides are decorated with complex gold and aluminum ornamentation.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer was used to paint the exterior of the piece while a brilliant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed and dated (2004) by the artist.
