This classic piece was created by the talented A. Kirov of Kholuy. Exquisite contours and delightful decoration compliment this inspirational composition.
Here we see a pair of beautiful swans in the midst of migration as they fly over the island of Kizhi. They are flying south to the Black Sea, where it is warmer and where they can spend their time relaxing with the knowledge that the frigid winter is miles from feather.
Kizhi is a small island approximately six by one kilometer, resting on the northeast side of Lake Onega. The name Kizhi, derived form old Korelian, means "game", is evidence of the first inhabitants of this island. The island is home to an outdoor museum of northern wooden architecture. The collection of structures, consists of churches, chapels, bell towers, peasant houses, granaries, barns, windmills, and bath houses - all collected from around the Onega region to illustrate the unique styles of architecture found in the Russian north.
The most remarkable creation on the island of Kizhi is the Transfiguration Cathedral (upper right corner of the painting). Thirty thousand shingles on twenty two separate cupolas situated on five tiers! Legend has it that one man, named Nestor, created this impressive structure alone, using only an ax as his tool of choice. Built in 1714, the grand Cathedral stands today, with not one single nail holding it in place. It is said that upon completion of this structure, Nestor reached back with all his strength and threw the ax into Lake Onega, uttering the words," NeBylo, net ee, i nebudet takoi!", meaning, "There never was, nor will there ever be such!"
To paint this scene the artist has used here mainly earth-tones. Browns and greens are the most prevalent colors in the landscape, which create a rustic atmosphere for the painting. Gold is used to paint the polished crosses on the church cupolas, and to add glimmering highlights throughout the composition.
Gold and aluminum filigree patterns are used to frame the composition, and also to decorate the sides of the box.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a sharp red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box isn't hinged, and rests on a flat bottom. The title ("Russian North"), the word 'Kholui' and the artist's signature can be found just under the composition. Beautifully done!
