Description:

This alluring piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by the talented Vladimir Kiselyov from the village of Kholuy. Vladimir has a talent that is thoroughly recognizable. His compositions are alive. It almost appears as if the action moves while one enjoys the piece.
The work is painted on the historical theme, and shows the Russian Saint and the patron of Russian warriors - Alexander Nevsky. Alexander Nevsky (1220-1263) Prince of Novgorod in 1236-1251. Grand Prince of Vladimir since 1252. Yaroslav II's son. Under his command the Russians won battles with the Swedes (Battle on Neva, 1240) and the Teutonic Knights (battle on the Ice of the Lake Chudskoe called "Ledovoe Poboishche", 1242).
Here we can see Alexander Nevsky battling with the Teutonic Knights at the head of the Russian Army. The ice of the Chudskoe Lake have cracked under the weight of the steel-clad Teutons, and some of them start sinking. The brushwork is exquisite, which is enhanced by the hairline gold and aluminum detailing.
The scene is framed with a nice gold and aluminum pattern composed of dots and beads. More complex gold and aluminum ornamentation accented with red and green tempera paints can be found wrapping around the box's sides. On the front side of the box's body Kiselyov has written the title of the work - ‘Alexander Nevsky' using bright red tempera paints.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged from the top of the scene, and rests on four legs. The artist has signed the work with his name, the title and the village of Kholui at the bottom of the scene. He did the same on the lid's interior.
