Alexander Smirnov, very famous among Kholui Artists, has painted this scene.His depiction of everyday life, in the icon-painting style, are flooded with cultural nuances that are unmistakably Russian.
The box shows a happy fisherman who has caught a huge fish. The fish that is depicted here is a catfish. Catfish are an amazing natural specimen living in lakes and rivers all over the world. They can grow to be over 100 pounds and 6 feet long.
The palette is based on darker greens and browns. Gold is used as a detailer that adds life and brightness to the scene.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with intricate gold patterns accented with aluminum framing the scene and wrapping around the side of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui and the title ("Fisherman").
