This small rectangular box has been painted by Kholuy painter Vagin. It shows several Russian winter birds, tomtits and bullfinches, sitting on the tree. The edges of the lid are decorated with gold beads, while the box's sides are decorated with a gold scrolling pattern.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom The work is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Kholui, the title (“Birds”).
