Description: The famous Kholui artist, Yugeniy Dobrin, painted this alluring box. Here he has chosen to depict a final moment from Pushkin's tale “Ruslan and Lyudmila”.
In the middle of the composition we can see Ruslan and his beloved Lyudmila riding Ruslan's mighty steed. Ruslan has just defeated the evil dwarf magician Chernomor who kidnapped Lyudmila and wanted to marry her. Defeated and tied with ropes Chermomor is painted behind Ruslan's back. From the right of the central scene we can see the Giant Head that told Ruslan the secret of Chernomor's magic power. All his power was contained in his long beard. Ruslan cut off Chernomor's beard with his shining sword and Chernomor's power was gone.
The palette is quite diverse but Yugeniy Dobrin's favorite emerald green tones of tempera paints predominate here. Gold paint is used to fill the composition with intricate details. Each minor element is very well drawn here.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with sumptuous gold patterns. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui, the year of 2009 and the title.
