Description: This box has been painted by established Kholui artist Dmitry Dobrin, the son of Eugeniy Dobrin. His mastery is at an all time high. This scene is a work of great skill and technical prowess.
The box depicts a final scene from the Pushkin's fairy-tale "Ruslan and Ludmila". In the middle of the composition we can see Ruslan and his beloved Lyudmila riding Ruslan's mighty steed. Ruslan has just defeated the evil dwarf magician Chernomor who kidnapped Lyudmila and wanted to marry her. Defeated and tied with ropes Chermomor is painted behind Ruslan's back. In the left bottom corner there is the Giant Head that told Ruslan the secret of Chernomor's magic power. All his power was contained in his long beard. Ruslan cut off Chernomor's beard with his shining sword and Chernomor's power was gone.
The palette is quite diverse and he uses pinks, browns, reds, greens and cream tones to define the characters, while dark greens and blues are used for the depiction of a surrounding forest landscape. This contrast also helps to make the central figures stand out. Gold paint is used to paint the sky, and also to detail the characters' costumes. Aluminum paint is used to paint Ruslan's chain mail. The artist fills the scene with lots of action and detail. Ruslan's horse is standing still, but its heavy body and the outline of its muscles suggest that it is powerful in motion. Motion throughout the composition has been captured within the swerve of the lines and shapes. Countless fine lines create the hairs of the beard and the horse's mane. The entire drawing is very well-drawn.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Kholuy. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the composition to be used for ease of opening. Precise and fine gold ornamentation decorates the lid and wraps around the sides of the box.
The box is signed with the artist's name, the village of Kholui, and the title at the bottom of the composition.
