Description: This adorable piece of Russian lacquer artistry was created by the talented V. Karlov of Kholui. It is unique because it has been painted by means of natural pigments. Natural pigments are rocks and minerals such as clay, coal, limestone, etc. The technology of painting using natural pigments was applied by Russian icon painters during centuries. It helped to achieve rich and beautiful coloring; and this alluring composition can easily prove this fact.
The work is based on the poem written by Richard Lewis. In the upper left corner of the composition there is the quatrain from this poem written in gold paints:
"If I don't love anybody, I'm free...
But how I can live without love?!
Only angels in paradise,
Can value such a freedom!"
The mood of the composition corresponds to the philosophic theme of the poem. Green monotonous palette is animated with the help of bright gold and aluminum paints.
The composition is framed with a gold line. The sides of the box are decorated with intricate gold and aluminum ornamentation. The interior of the lid includes the golden emblem of the cooperative society "Sparkling World" where works Karlov, the confirmation that it is the original author's work based on Richard Lewis's poetry, the artist's name, the village of Kholui, the artist's signature and the statement informing that the box has been made by means of unique technology using natural pigments. Inside the box you can find the paper certificate of "Sparkling World" society.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the left of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name at the bottom of the composition in gold paints.
