This picturesque view of St.-Petersburg has been created by the talented Kholui master, Yelena Salikova. Here we can see the embankment of the Fontanka River. Painting in diminutive strokes, the artist has managed to express a special atmosphere of the city and the grandeur of its architecture.
The scene is painted in light blue and grey tones that are the most suitable of depiction of St.-Petersburg. Silver powder is used to create a sparkle of the sky, to highlight the river and the architecture. Gold paint is used to detail the architecture, the river and the trees.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold scrollwork frames the scene on the lid, while highly complex ornamentation painted in gold and aluminum makes it way around the sides of the box. The box has a hinge above the scene and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, and village of Kholui.
