This charming small box was painted by Larisa Poturaiko from the village of Kholui. It is called "Friends", and shows rather a strange scene. The big cat lies under the tree and plays with two white mice. The cat isn't going to hunt the mice, and the mice are not afraid of the cat.
The scene is painted in the shades of green, blue and brown against the black background typical for all Palekh boxes. Gold paints detail each element of the composition. This builds radiance and texture, both at the same time.
The exterior of the box is richly decorated with lustrous gold ornamentation, and covered with black lacquer. The interior of the piece is traditionally red. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on a small rim. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
