Description:

Kosobryukhova of Kholuy is the artist who painted this box with a scene from the legend "Dobrynya Nikintich and the Dragon". Dobrynya is known primarily for his dramatic battles with dragons. He managed to conquer the horrible dragon, Gorynytch, who devastated Russian lands and killed the Russians. But before Dobrynya started chopping off the beast's heads, Gorynytch started to plead for his life and the lives of his children. Being good at heart, the hero took pity on the beast and let him go. The dragon deceived Dobrynya Nikintich and soon kidnapped the niece of Prince Vladimir, Zabava. Prince Vladimir was angry with Dobrynya when he knew that the hero fought with the dragon and couldn't kill him. So, Dobrynya had to set out in search of the dragon for the second time. He managed to find Gorynytch's cave, where his children were hiding. Dobrynya killed the dragon's children, then he again fought with Gorynytch and killed him, and at last he managed to release Zabava. As a reward, the bogatyr was granted permission to marry Zabava, since the two had fallen in love during the trek back to Kiev. They lived happily until the end of their days as Dobrynya continued to protect his homeland against all forms of evil.
The artist's palette is very diverse and is full of bold and bright colors. Great movement is achieved through an enormous amount of lines and color transitions within the composition. Gold and aluminum paints are used to detail portions of the piece so that more attention is brought to those areas. This composition is full of life and attracts light even in the most dimmed viewing conditions.
The composition is framed with gold beads. The box's sides are decorated with gold and aluminum scrollwork.
The box is made out of paper-mache made. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged and rests on a flat bottom. The artist has signed and titled his work at the bottom of the composition.
