Description: This is the reproduction of Ivan Shishkin's famous painting, “Mast Tree Grove” (1898). One can find the original of it in the Russian Museum situated in St. Petersburg.
For Shishkin and his contemporaries, the image of nature could not be separated from the idea of Russia, its people and their destiny. The famous critic Stassov described Shishkin's paintings as "landscape for heroes", but at the same time, Shishkin attempted the most exact and scientific approach to the subject represented. This was noted by his friend, the painter Kramskoy: "The forest is wild, the ferruginous water of the stream is dark yellow, with the stream bed covered in rocks...". Shishkin has been described as "a realist with deep inner convictions who knew to feel deeply and to love nature with a passion..." But with all of this in mind, it must be pointed out that the artist introduces contrasts into landscape, making it theatrical and giving us a kind of "spectacle of nature".
This box was painted during one of Kholuy's periods of experimentation in which some artists were using oil paints.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box and red lacquer for the interior. The box has a hinge located to the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is titled and signed with the artist's initials.
