Description:

Vladimir Yakovlev of Kholuy has painted this traditional box that is more than forty years old and come to a semi-antique raw. Its subject is based on the Russian fairy-tale "Sadko". Here Sadko plays a wonderful tune on his psaltery while the Tsar Morskoi (the King of the Sea) dances merrily to the accompaniment of Sadko's music. His dancing becomes so frenzied that numerous ships sink in the sea.
The palette is based on beautiful combination of contrast colors. Cold greens and blues are used to paint the sea, while warm yellows, reds and oranges are used to paint the characters.
The scene is framed with gold beading. One the interior of the lid you can see the following memorable inscription written in gold paints: "To Morozova Z.D. in honor of her fiftieth anniversary from the workers of the "Car Repair Plant", 10.11.1971." The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge from the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the title, and the village of Kholui.
