Description:

This box was painted by Veronika Vorontsova from the village of Kholui. It shows a scene from the well-known fairy-tale "Princess Frog". Ivan stands near the small pond and doesn't know what to do. His arrow fell near the frog, and that is why it is destined to be his wife. His father ordered that he and his brothers were to each shoot a golden arrow, and where it landed, they were to take a bride. Our prince, the youngest, has had the misfortune of firing into a bog, and the only creature near is a large frog, who waits patiently with the arrow in its mouth. Luckily, the frog was really an enchanted princess, and it is a zest of the story.
The composition is painted in bright colors. The palette is based on beautiful combinations of red, yellow, green and blue tones. Gold paint highlights the landscape, creating dramatic swirls in the leaves and needles on the trees, and it also enhances Ivan's costume, the Frog's crown and the arrow in its mouth. Besides the main characters of this story, Ivan Tsarevich and the Frog, the artist also depicts different animals: a bear, squirrels and different birds, making the composition's structure more complex.
To decorate the box, the artist paint the golden swirling pattern on the box's edges, and the beautiful gold and aluminum floral pattern on it's sides.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache made in the village of Kholui. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer to paint the interior of the box. The box isn't hinged and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist's name, village and title.
