Description: This small oval box is a creation of Khromov Yevgeniy from the village of Kholui. It shows a final episode from the Russian folk fairy-tale "Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf". Ivan returns to his native kingdom with the beautiful wife, and the magic firebird. His faithful friend, the Grey Wolf , carries them all on his back while jumping over the hills, the forests and the rivers.
The scene is nicely painted and filled with a great amount of minute details. The costumes of the characters and the architecture are detailed with bright gold paint. Silver powder is used to create a sparkle of the river. Gold and silver paint is also used to decorate the box's sides with luxuriant patterns.
The box is constructed from high-grade papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui and the title on the lid's interior.
