Description:

This charming round box was painted by a talented Kholui artist Sergey Kiryanov, who specialized on the architectural scenes. The box is called "Kholui", and shows the village of Kholui that is one of four centers of lacquer miniature painting in Russia. On the composition can see major cathedral-St.Trinity Church and the houses of painters and villagers scattered around the church and on the banks of the river Teza.
The artist has chosen to depict the village of Kholui in summertime that is why the surrounding landscape is painted in blue greenish tones. Creamy, green, and red tones dominate in the depiction of architecture, while the background is traditionally black. Gold paint is used to paint the trees depicted in the foreground, the stars in the dark sky, and also to detail the architecture.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Kholui. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Beautiful gold ornamentation frames the scene and wraps around the sides of the box. The box has no hinge and rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name, village, and title ("Kholui")
