Description: This unusual mill-shaped box was painted by a well-known Kholui artist Mikhail Smirnov. Experienced elegance! The master's work exudes personality and skill.
The box shows the episode from the legend of Volga and Mikula-two Russian epic Heroes. The lid shows Volga speaking to Mikula Selyaninovich who plows the field while on the background we can see Volga's soldiers, they will not be able to pull out Mikula's plow from the ground. Mikula Selyaninovich was one of the most popular bogatyrs/epic heroes in Russia, the ploughman, and the embodiment of hard-working Russian people. The strongest of the Russian bogatyrs, Svyatogor, couldn't lift the bag filled with the Earth's heaviness dropped out of Mikula's hands. Prince Werewolf, Volga, together with his army, also couldn't surpass Mikula in strength. They all couldn't lift Mikula's plough.
The edges of the lid and the base of the box are decorated with gorgeous gold floral patterns.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. The lid is not hinged and the box rests flat. The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer and interior is painted with red lacquer. The artist wrote his name, the title and the village name of Kholui along the bottom of the box's exterior in gold paint.
