Description: This complex composition was painted by the prominent Kholui artist, Kozhemyakina Irina. It is called "For Russ (short from Russia)", the work is painted on the theme of Russian history.
Here we can see the Russian warriors battling against the Mongolian tatars on the Kulikovo battle. At the left side of the composition the artist depicts Prince Dmitry Donskoy defeating the Tatar commander. In the center of the composition we can see the beginnig of the battle, when two the best (and sometimes the most experienced warriors) were struggling between each other.Their names were Peresvet (from the Russians) and Chelubey (from the Tatars).
Intresting historical fact. Peresvet was not a warrior, he was a monk for the last several years. Chelubey was a really big and experienced guy, and all Russian warriors were afraid of him, because Chelubey has won about THREE HUNDRED individual fights! Tatar's warrior has a spear about one meter longer than the average warriors has used, and that was one the reasons, why he was winning.
Peresvet instead of using shield and protective armour decided, that a spear of Chelubey should go through his body, and he will reach Chelubey with his spear. The riders start getting closer to each other and the plan of Peresvet has worked. Yes, Chelubey's spear went throght Peresvet's body, but Peresvet's spear break thought the shield and killed Chelubey. Unkillable Chelubey has died. The horse of Peresvet has bring her rider to the Russian troops and Peresvet has died on their hands...Some of these facts are known by Tibetian monks...
The Kulikovo battle took place in 1380. Dmitry Donskoy displayed his military talents in this battle. In honor of the gained victory Prince Dmitry was called Donskoy.
The Kulikovo battle became the largest fight of the Middle Ages. More than one hundred thousand warriors participated in it. The Golden Horde was defeated.
The Kulikovo battle became the turning point in the struggle of Russia against the Tatar-Mongol Yoke and influenced the formation of the united Russian state, the creation of the Russian national consciousness.
To paint this work, Irina has used her favorite palette filled with emerald greens, violets, grays and oranges. The artist focuses the viewer's attention on a figure of Dmitriy Donskoy, but all the details painted in the background are precisely and accurately painted. The details are richly enhanced with gold metallic paint that adds a rich brightness to the work.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with sumptuous gold patterns. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui, and the title.
