Description:

Ivan and Marya are trying to get away, but Koschei the Deathless is right on their heels. He takes Marya twice unsuccessfully because Koschei's horse is just too fast. To remedy this and rescue his love he goes to Baba Yaga for help. This is a dangerous proposition because there are always some sort of stipulations to dealings with the witch. Marya gives Ivan, before he departs to Baba Yaga, a magic kerchief that will allow him to get over the bridge crossing the river of fire. He eventually gets to Baba Yaga and to avoid being eaten by her he steals one of her fastest horses. She finds out and upon crossing the river of fire to catch up with him, she falls through the bridge because she did not have the kerchief. This time Ivan is able to save Marya and in the process kill Koschei, who was deathless until now, when he tried to catch up to them.
Kholuy's V. Romanov is one of the most talented young artists in the village. He has emerged from a strong class of young talent, and made a name for himself by blending his personal techniques with the classic ones forged into him over the years.
He uses a brown and green palette that incorporates infusions of warm tones for emphasis. He makes the sky pure gold, which casts a complementary light over the landscape. There are three areas of the composition that he designates for action. On the right side he places two scenes on top of each other (Koschei leaving the kingdom of Marya Morevna and Baba Yaga pasturing her magic steeds), and to the left he gives Ivan and Marya full use of the landscape. The flow of the composition is configured so that the eye naturally scans the scene without any visual obstructions. Gold is also limned into the body of the scene with discretion and to keep intact the artistic integrity of the composition.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Kholuy. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold ornamentation with red accents frames the composition and wraps around the sides of the box. The intricacy of this design is a great tribute to the wonderful rendering on the lid. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four feet. The artist has written the title ("Marya Morevna"), Kholuy, and his name at the bottom of the box.
