Description: This splendid box was painted by A. Bayev from the village of Kholui. It is entitled "In that Land where birds don't fear people" and features everyday life of Russian peasants who live in harmony with nature. They build houses, reap the harvest of wheat, fish, and after their work they rest like the girls depicted in the foreground singing and dancing in a ring. Their land is so wild that here birds and animals are not afraid of people. Here forests teem with different animal and rivers teem with fish.
The palette is relaxing to the eye and filled with different shades of green, brown and gray. Aluminum paint is used to depict the surface of the lake. The variety of shapes and the overall plotting of the sketch grab our attention first and foremost. Each plant, tree, bush, flower and weed seem to grow by themselves! Fine, single hair, brushwork brings the texture to life. Bayov does fine work with the background sky. The morning sunrise seems to illuminate everything around with its warm rays. Very poetic execution.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while shiny red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition. The box rests upon four feet on the bottom of the piece.
Bayov completes the work with a stunning arrangement of decoration. Golden filigree expands into rolling bouquets accentuated with aluminum petals. One frames the lid's artistry while the other wraps around all four sides of the base. Beautiful.
The artist wrote his name, the title of the piece and the village name of Kholuy along the bottom of the composition in gold paint.
Photo of the artist with this box can be found in the section "artists".
