Description:

This Sergey Dmitriyev's masterpiece is another in a line of works that he has been crafting from the depths of his creative mind. In the foreground he places Pushkin walking along the Neva's embankment. From the left of him there is the beautiful park, while from the right the artist depicts the Neva's silvery waters with the sailing ship moored to the bank and several boats. In the background we can see some of the cathedrals and monuments of St. Petersburg. The highest of them is the St. Peter and St. Paul Fortress. In the upper part of the composition the artist paints the ribbon streaming in the wind, and writes on it the name of city he dedicates this work to (St. Petersburg). In the bottom part of the composition he paints the sheet of paper, and in the middle of it he writes in gold a line from Pushkin's verse also dedicated to St. Petersburg: "I love You, the Peter's Creation!" Here we should remind you that Pushkin was born in Moscow but lived and died in St. Petersburg. From the top of the sheet Dmitriev writes the title of the composition ("St. Petersburg"), while from the bottom of it he writes the village of Kholui and his name all in tempera paints.
The scene is painted in golden-bluish palette. Both gold and aluminum paints are used to detail the Pushkin's figure, the ship, the architecture and the surrounding landscape. The usage of these glistering metal paints is so abundant that we could say that the scene is painted in gold and aluminum and detailed with tempera paints. Each detail is rendered with great care and scrutinized with the idea of perfection in mind. This composition possesses an ideal blend of tonality, scene layout, and precision.
The composition is framed with a simple gold line while the sides of the box are decorated with elegant gold filigree patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the piece. The lid is hinged and the box rests on legs. On the box's interior Dmitriev writes again a line from Pushkin's verse: "I love You, the Peter's Creation!", then he writes St. Petersburg, his name, Kholui, and the year of 2005 all in gold paints.
