Description: This traditional Kholui box was created by the talented artist D. Dobrin. It shows a scene from the popular Russian fairy-tale "The Snowmaiden" or "Snegurochka". The Snowmaiden isn't a human being. Her father is Old Man Winter and her mother is Fair Spring. She is depicted here peeping out from the forest thicket and looking at the village where people live. Now she doesn't know who people are, but she wants to be their friend and live among them. Later she will wish to be like people and to know what love is. Love will kill her in the end, as she isn't a human being. She is a Snowmaiden, and her ice heart is doomed to melt when she falls in love with somebody.
The scene is painted in the beautiful blue-greenish palette. Gold paint is used to paint the sky, and also to detail the architecture, the birds, the trees and the snow. Aluminum paint is used to paint the sun rays, and also to detail the costume of Snowmaiden, the trees and the snow.
The composition is framed with beautiful gold filigree design supplemented with aluminum snowflakes and flowers. The same design of bigger size decorates the sides of the box.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Kholuy. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top and the box rests on four legs. The artist wrote his name, the title and the village name of Kholuy along the bottom of the composition in gold paint.
