Description: This piece entitled "The Song about young Merchant Kalashnikov, the Servant of Tsar Ivan Vasilievich," was painted by the famous Kholui artist Sergey Devyatkin. His style is one of the most recognizable in the world of lacquer art. His flowing designs and patterns have a machine quality precision and he stylizes his work in the icon painting style. The blend of his creative power and the ancient techniques of icon painters has made his work something special to the art world.
The composition shows the clue moment from this story. Kalashnikov and Kiribeevich start a boxing match. The reason of it is Kalashnikov's wife, Alyona Dmitrievna, whom Kiribeevich tried to tempt. Between them sits the Tsar Ivan Vasilievich, called Ivan the Terrible.
There is a great sense of balance in the way he configures the architecture in relation to the characters. The artist has used gold to detail almost the architecture the characters' costumes.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold ornamentation with aluminum accents frames the scene and wraps around the sides of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four legs. The artist has written the title, Kholuy, and his name at the bottom of the composition.
