Description: This magnificent work has been created by the famous Khlui artist Victor Yolkin. It shows an episode from the ancient Russian bylina "Solovey Budimirovich". Solovey Budimirovich was a rich merchant who came to Kiev, and was permitted by Prince Vladimir to built the crystal palace in the beautiful garden. He fell in love with the niece of Prince Vladimir whose name was Zabava Putyatichna. Prince Vladimir allowed them to marry, but Solovey delayed the marriage ceremony as he wanted to visit his motherland. When he left Kiev, the Tatar Prince came to the city and ordered Vladimir to let him marry Zabava. He threatened that he will burn Kiev out, if he didn't marry Zabava. This bylina ends happily. Solovey Budimirovich returns to Kiev, kills the Tatar Prince, and marries Zabava.
The composition is painted in bright tempera paints. Gold and aluminum paints are used to add minute details to the scene. Gold is also used to paint the sky.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's sides and lid are decorated with beautiful patterns painted in gold and aluminum. The box is hinged, and rests on four legs. It is signed with the artist's name, the title, and the village of Kholui.
