Description:

Sergey Deviatkin, an extremely skilled Kholuy artist, created this gorgeous work. In July 2005, a tragic occasion happened. The world famous artist, the favorite of lacquer miniature enthusiasts who managed to work out his own peculiar style in lacquer miniature art, Sergey Deviatkin, died. The outstanding artist passed away, but he left us the products of his creativity, and many young artists will use numerous painting techniques worked out by him. This work is one of his latest creations.
The work is called "Moscow", the title can be found inside the beautiful gold filigree located at the bottom of the composition, in the middle. Another, more concrete title "Moscow, XVI century" is inserted into the gold filigree that decorate the upper right corner of the composition.
In the middle of the composition the artist depicts Ivan the Terrible (1533-1584) who was the cruelest tsar in the Russian history. To the left from him there are several tsar guards riding mighty steeds. In the background there is the famous St. Basil's Cathedral built by the order of Ivan the Terrible in honor of the Kazan's conquest. Just behind the St. Basil's Cathedral painted in red and brown tones the artist depicts some of the Moscow Kremlin's white stone cathedrals.
The composition is painted in warm tones against the black background that strengthens the colors. Gold paint is used to detail the architecture, the characters' costumes, and the bridles of the horses. What makes Deviatkin's works special is the gold filigree he so masterfully painted on his boxes. This work also shows how beautiful the ornamentation of a box can be. Skillfully painted, bright luxuriant patterns frame the composition on the lid, and decorate the sides of the box.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Kholui.
