This wonderful large box is painted by the famous Kholui artist Sergey Dmitiev. Collectors and art enthusiasts value highly works by this artist. His works always stand out for high quality of execution, interesting subjects and particular style. In the composition the artist depicts a young beautiful woman riding in a carriage. She has made herself comfortable on the soft seat of the carriage and wrapped herself up in a shawl. We may only guess where she is wending her way. May be she is hurrying to a ball or to a theatre where she will be radiant with all her youth and beauty. In the background the artist depicts the Moscow River and the golden domes of the Kremlin's cathedrals.
Looking at the background attentively we can make a tour of the Moscow Kremlin and see the world famous buildings. (from right to left) The magnificent architectural ensemble - the Belfry of Ivan the Terrible; the Cathedral of Assumption; the Archangel Cathedral; the fragment of the Church of the Deposition of Robe (to the right, just above the woman's hat) ; the cupolas of the Domestic Churches; the Terem Palace and the Cathedral of the Annunciation.
The artist also pays a special attention to the depiction of the woman. Delicate brushwork details her face, clothes and the elegant hat adorned with the incomparably beautiful flower.
This wonderful composition reflects the artist's superior skill and talent. All elements of the composition are painted with minute details. Owing to a dignified precision that is a result of the excellent execution, all architectural buildings look like their origins in reality. Aesthetically the composition is well balanced and the linear structure brings an appealing quality to the work. The sun rays that fall on the golden domes of the cathedrals through the dark clouds, the spectral reflection of the cathedrals on the rippled water splendidly animate the composition and make it look more natural.
The coloring of the composition is based on the beautiful blending of green, gray and brown tones. Gold paint is used to highlight the architecture, especially, the domes, to adorn the woman's clothes and add ornamentation to the carriage.
The box is constructed from paper-mache, with a hinge above the composition. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. Fine golden beading frames the composition, while the corners of the composition are decorated with intricate gold scrollwork. The edges of the lid are decorated with elegant, original designs painted in gold and aluminum. The same design is repeated on the sides of the box, but it is larger in size. The box rests on four carved feet. The artist completes the piece by writing the title, "Kholui", year (2003) and his name in gold paint under the composition.
