Description: This oval shaped box showing a scene from the popular fairy-tale "Morozko" (or "Father Frost") was created by the talented Mars Valiev from the village of Kholui.
The tale tells about the little girl who is sent to the forest on a bitterly cold night by her cruel stepmother. The stepmother intends to kill the girl because she is more beautiful and hardworking than her own daughter. The poor girl sits under the tree till Father Frost finds her. He blows at her with his frost breathing, but in spite of her suffering, the girl greets him politely and does not complain about her condition. Impressed by her stoicism and respectful demeanor Father Frost rewards her with a fur coat, a box filled with jewels, and other fine treasures. The end of the tale is happy: the girl is rewarded while her stepmother and stepsister are punished.
Here the artist shows the familiar scene of the fairy-tale: Father Frost endows the girl with rich presents. To focus the viewer's attention on the main characters the artist paints them in bright red and orange tones that contrast with cool gray and blue tones of the forest setting. The costumes of both characters are richly decorated with gold and aluminum paints. Gold paints are also used to paint the treasures inside the box.
The scene is framed with a string of gold and aluminum beads. The same string decorates the bottom border of the box. The sides of the box are decorated with a lovely pattern that consists of gold scrolls and silver snowflakes.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on four rounded feet. Signed with the name of the artist, the village of Kholui and the title.
