Description: This splendid box has been painted by the outstanding Kholui artist Sergey Dmitriev. The work is called "Indian Summer in Vladimir". It features a wonderful state of nature when the warmth of summer suddenly returns during the middle of autumn. It's a very beautiful period when the trees covered with gold and bright red foliage seem to shine illuminated by the bright sunrays. In Russian "Indian summer" is translated literally into "girl's summer."
In the background the artist depicts the Uspensky (Assumption) and Dmitrievsky Cathedrals located in Vladimir, which is the former capital of ancient Rus. It is a very interesting fact that the Moscow Kremlin's Assumption Cathedral was modeled after the Cathedral of Assumption in Vladimir. It is connected with relocation of capital from Vladimir to Moscow.
The scene is painted in brown and orange tones suitable for depiction of the autumn season. Gold paint is used to highlight leaves of the trees, the roofs of the houses and the domes of the cathedrals.
Rich gold and aluminum ornamentation decorates the box exterior.
The box is constructed out of papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer is used to paint the interior of the box. The lid is hinged at the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Kholui, the title and the year of 2006 at the bottom of the scene. The same information can be found on the lid's interior, only here the artist confirmed that this box is the artist's original creation made by the member of Russian Union of Artists.
