Description: This grandiose work was created by Mikhail Veselov of Kholuy. His brother, Victor, is also a talented artist, and the two have carved a distinct niche for themselves in Kholuy. Mikhail's works are easily recognizable in the construction of the scene and the way he works his palette. Today his pieces find themselves in museums throughout Russia and in private collections around the world.
The large box contains a removable plate with four compartments for keeping four boxes of a smaller size. Each compartment has four small round hollows for the legs of boxes. Pushkin's tales inspired Veselov to produce this set of boxes.
The large box features the most recognizable scenes from "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". In the left upper corner Tsar Saltan proposes marriage to one of the sisters who wishes to give birth to a child for the tsar. In the right upper corner the tsar's servants throw the barrel into the sea. In this barrel the young tsaritsa and her child are sealed by the tsar's cruel order. In the middle of the composition Tsar Saltan has arrived to the wondrous island of Prince Gvidon. He has heard so many fantastic stories about this place! Each scene is detailed with gold paints.
The exterior of the large box is covered with black lacquer and decorated with luxuriant gold and aluminum floral patterns. Its interior is also covered with black lacquer, except the bottom covered with red lacquer. The removable plate is covered with black lacquer from one side (where four compartments are located), and with red lacquer from the opposite side. The lid is hinged at the top, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the lid's interior the artist wrote his name, the title, Kholui, the year of 2006, and the fact that this is an author's original work.
One of four boxes that you can find inside the large box is based on "The Tale of Golden Fish". It shows the fisherman's greedy wife ordering her husband to fulfill her absurd wishes with the help of magic fish. In the right upper corner she again sits near her cracked washtub.
The second one features some episodes from "Ruslan and Lyudmila" including Ruslan's conversation with the Old Finn, his battle with the evil dwarf magician Chernomor, and his victorious return to his native kingdom with his beloved Lyudmila.
The third one is based on "The Tale of Sleeping Princess and Seven Bogatyrs". Here we can see Prince Yelisey asking the Red Sun where he can find his beloved Princess, the Evil Queen looking at her reflection in the magic mirror, and the Sleeping Princess surrounded with seven bogatyrs.
The fourth one depicts a moment from "The Tale of Golden Cockerel" when Tsar Dadon kills the astrologer with his scepter, and the Golden Cockerel ready to attack the foolish tsar.
The exterior of each box is covered with black lacquer, and decorated with intricate gold and aluminum ornamentation. Gold and aluminum paints also add various details throughout the scenes painted on the boxes. The interior of each box is traditionally red. Each box is hinged at the top, and rests on four rounded legs. On the lid's interior of each box the artist wrote his name, the title, Kholui, the year of 2006, and the fact that this is an author's original work.
