This traditional Kholui box is a creation of Olga Dobrina. It is called “Games of Mermaids”, and features the lad who came across two mermaids swimming in the forest pond. In ancient times Russian people believed that every pond, a lake, and a river is inhabited by mermaids. This folk belief is reflected in a number of fairy-tales and legends.
The palette is based on contrast colors. The characters are painted in warm brown, red, and orange tones whereas the surrounding landscape is drawn in cold turquoise blue tones. Besides the main characters the composition is filled with a lot of additional details including various plants, trees, flowers and animals.
The scene is framed with a nice floral pattern painted in gold and aluminum. More complex gold floral design accented with aluminum wraps around the box's sides.
The box is constructed out of papier-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge affixed from the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist's name, the village of Kholui, and the title (“Games of Mermaids”).
