Description: This beautiful large box has been painted by the famous Kholui artist Sergey Dmitiev. Collectors and art enthusiasts value highly works by this artist. His boxes always stand out for high quality of execution, interesting subjects and a distinctive style.
The box shows a recognizable moment from the tale of Golden Cockerel written by A. Pushkin. Tsar Dadon receives the magic golden cockerel from the astrologer and in return promises to fulfill any of the astrologer's wishes.
The scene is painted in the beautiful palette based on a successful combination of bright orange-red and turquoise-green tempera paints. Gold paint that has been used as an underlayer for the entire scene enhances the colors and shines beautifully through the tempera paints. Gold paint applied with a very thin brush also adds various details and fills the scene with a festive luster.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold and aluminum ornaments painted in Dmitriev's luxuriant style.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the year of 2007 and Kholui at the bottom of the scene. This inscription is repeated on the lid's interior, with the addition of the confirmation that it is the artist's original work and the artist's flourishing signature.
