This beautiful Kholuy box has been painted by the outstanding Kholui artist Sergey Dmitriev. It shows the main characters from the popular Russian fairy -tale “The Snowmaiden”. The left part of the composition shows Lel playing his flute, and some village girls who listen his wonderful tune. In the central part of the composition Dmitriev has drawn the Snowmaiden, the daughter of nature. The right part of the composition features the Snowmaiden's parents, Father Frost and Faire Spring.
The box demonstrates Dmitriev's impeccable painting technique and his distinctive artistic style. The composition is painted in green tones of tempera paints. Gold paint is used to create a sparkle of the sky, to details the costumes of all characters, to paint some of the bushes and firs in the foreground, and also to highlight the foliage of the trees. Silver paint highlights the water of the pond.
The box's exterior is decorated with Dmiriev's style luxuriant gold ornaments accented on the box's sides with silver paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. At the bottom of the composition the artist has written his name, the title, Kholui, and the year of 2007. On the lid's interior he has written the same but added the confirmation that this box is the artist's original work, stated the fact that the creator of this work is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia, and also left his signature.
