Description:

This small box painted on the theme of Russian history has been created by Kholuy artist Grachov. Here he has chosen to depict the Russian Prince Dmitry Pozharsky (1578-1642) standing at the head of his army. Holding the sword and the shield, he is ready to defend his motherland.
Dmitry Pozharsky is a Russian national hero who headed the war of liberation of the Russian people against the Lithuanian and Polish interventionists, which ended with the expulsion of the invaders from the Kremlin in 1612.
The scene is passionately painted using egg-tempera paints. Grachov has used bright red colors for Dmitry Pozharsky's attire and paler colors for the background elements. This keeps the focus on the main character, but still allows the eye to wander over the rest of the scene, finding keen details. Excellent attention has been paid to Dmitry Pozharsky's figure, particularly his face, so that it is near portrait quality. The palette of egg-tempera paints is accented with metallic gold which is used only in key places in the composition.
The scene is framed with a simple pattern composed of gold beads. The box's sides are adorned with a nice gold leafy ornamentation.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer is used to paint the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title ("Prince D.M. Pozharsky"), and the village of Kholui.
