Description: Sergey Dmitriyev of Kholui does not cease to amaze his audience with each new box he paints. One gets a sense that he is only getting better with every subsequent work that appears from under his already talented brush. His skill is at the level of a Master; however, with each passing improvement one can speculate that the peak of his artistic ability might be a few years down the road. Collecting his work is quite interesting because it shows his evolution. Where many artists stagnate, Sergey Dmitriyev still excels!
Suzdal is one of the oldest towns in north-east Russia. It was the Capital of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality in the 11th Century. Town of Suzdal is located approximately 200 km from Moscow on the banks of the River Kamenka . The view of the Bell-towers and Domes of Churches share a tree-lined panorama with vistas of the horizon stretching as far as the eye can see. Suzdal is a very old, legendary town with a fairy-tale charm. The white stone walls of its Kremlin and Monasteries own a majestic beauty, its Church domes and Belfries soar into the sky, and its neat wooden houses are decorated with exquisite carved patterns!
Centuries have passed without marring the beauty of olden Suzdal with modern architecture. The architectural aspect of the town, which has taken shape over the course of Centuries has perpetuated in stone, the history of Suzdal, which is closely linked with the history of the old Russia and its rich culture. The remarkable heritage of Suzdal has turned this small town into an inimitable open-air museum. The town is rightly regarded as a gem of Russian national culture. Indeed, it contains about 100 monuments of secular and Church architecture. Suzdal has preserved its natural environment and the need to keep its original beauty intact has been taken into account by developers looking to prolong its wealth of cultural wonder!
The palette of the box dominated with light green and golden-yellow tones shows a representation of town of Suzdal in Winter. The colors of the egg-tempera have been enhanced by the gold and aluminum highlights noticed throughout. The artist adds trees in the foreground that bends towards the center of the scene to give a sense of perspective, as sometimes perspectives can be lost when an expanse as wide and open as this is presented to them. And the oval shape of the box only underscores that!
The box is made out of paper-mache. Dark Green aluminum mixed lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Beautiful gold and aluminum ornamentation wraps around the sides of the box and frame the composition . The box has a hinge above the scene and rests on the flat bottom. The artist has written Kholui, the title "Winter in Suzdal" and his name at the bottom of the scene. He also writes this on the interior of the lid, but adds his signature and the year of 2008, all in gold.
Brilliantly done piece! Highly recommended to any collection!
