Description:

This alluring piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by the talented Vladimir Kiselyov from the village of Kholuy. His love of taking subjects and events from history sets him apart from his peers. His style has no boundaries and his realistic approach to his work makes it unique. He does use techniques of icon-painting, but to a lesser extent so as to exploit his creativity to the fullest on his boxes.
The work is painted on the historical theme. Life and feats of the Russian Saint and the patron of Russian warriors - Alexander Nevsky inspired Kiselyov to create this box. Born on May 30 of 1220 Alexander Nevsky inherited his father's political wisdom and desire to unite the feuding Russian principalities. From his mother's ancestors he inherited courage and compassion. He was the Prince of Novgorod during 1236-1251, and the Grand Prince of Vladimir since 1252. Under his command the Russians won battles against the Swedes (Battle on Neva, 1240) and the Teutonic Knights (battle on the Ice of the Lake Chudskoe called "Ledovoe Poboishche", 1242).
On the box's lid, and on the box's sides the artist has painted the Russian army under the command of Alexander Nevsky defeating the Teutonic Knights. The brushwork is exquisite, which is enhanced by the hairline gold detailing.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with rich and intricate gold patterns accented with bright red and green tempera paint. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The artist has signed the work with his name, the title and the village of Kholui at the bottom of the scene. He did the same on the lid's interior but added the year of 2009 and the fact that this is his creative work,.
