Description: This enticing Kholuil miracle is a creation of Yugeny Dobrin from the village of Kholui. The elegantly shaped box shows a scene from the popular Russian fairy-tale "The Snowmaiden" or "Snegurochka". In the left part of the composition the artist has painted the Snowmaiden peeping out of the trees. The right part of the composition depicts Lel, Mizgir and other people of the Berendey Kingdom. In the center of the composition the artist has painted Snowmaiden's mother, Fair Spring, riding the steed.
Dobrin's favorite turquoise green tones of tempera paints predominate here. Gold and aluminum paints are used to fill the scene with an innumerable number of lustrous details. The colors, fine landscape and neatly painted details give this box a very attractive appearance.
Dobrin's skill as an artist is further demonstrated on the rich ornamentation that adorns the box's exterior. The ornamentation consists of complex gold filigree designs accented by aluminum paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on legs. On the lid's interior Dobrin has written the title ("The Snowmaiden"), the year of 2009, Kholui, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work.
