Description: This historical scene was painted by Kholui artist Yugeniy Dobrin. It depicts a very important moment in the history of Russia - the christening of pagan Rus (Russia). In 988 ancient Rus (Russia) was christened by Prince Vladimir, who also was christened the same year. Vladimir gathered all citizens of Kiev on the bank of the Dnepr River in the waters of which Byzantine priests were christening people. The way to the orthodoxy was paved by Princess Olga (the grandmother of Vladimir), who was christened in 955 in the town of Constantinople. At the top of the composition we can see the figure of Andrey Pervozvany, the first Byzantine priest who was sent to christen Russia but was tragically killed.
Dobrin paints with a unique style combining turquoise-green, grey and brown tones of tempera paints. Gold paint is used to detail the costumes of the characters and to create brilliance of the cupolas and roofs. The edges of the lid are adorned with elegant Dobrin's signature style patterns painted in gold.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on legs. The work is signed, titled (“Christening of Rus”) and dated (2009) by the artist at the bottom of the composition. Inside the lid, Dobrin has again provided the title, the year, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. The finishing touch is a cursive signature to finalize this Kholuy miracle.
