Description:

This is a true masterpiece of the prominent Kholui artist Yugeniy Dobrin. Called "Duel", the work is painted on the theme of Russian history. Here we can see the Russian warriors battling against the Mongolian tatars on the Kulikovo battle. In the center of the composition the artist depicts Prince Dmitry Donskoy defeating the Tatar commander.
The Kulikovo battle took place in 1380. Dmitry Donskoy displayed his military talents in this battle. In honor of the gained victory Prince Dmitry was called Donskoy.
The Kulikovo battle became the largest fight of the Middle Ages. More than one hundred thousand warriors participated in it. The Golden Horde was defeated. The Kulikovo battle became the turning point in the struggle of Russia against the Tatar-Mongol Yoke and influenced the formation of the united Russian state, the creation of the Russian national consciousness.
To paint this work, Dobrin has used his favorite palette filled with emerald greens, violets, grays and oranges. The composition is classically designed. The artist focuses the viewer's attention on the central scene but all the details painted in the background are precisely and accurately painted. The composition includes more than fifteen well-defined figures of the warriors while there is also a great amount of fragments of the warriors' bodies. The details are richly enhanced with gold metallic paint that adds a rich brightness to the work.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with sumptuous gold patterns. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui, the year of 2009 and the title.
