The prominent Kholui artist, Sergey Dmitriev, is the author of this stunning box that depicts the gathering of characters from Lewis Carroll's classic tale "Alice in Wonderland". It is amazing how the artist could find place for so many figures both animal and human. Each of them is an easy recognizable character from the tale. Here we can see Alice, the Hatter, the Hare, the Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Mouse, the Fish, the Flamingo, the Caterpillar and certainly the Queen accompanied by her soldiers.
The scene is painted in Sergey Dmitriev's unique style. Each minute detail is enhanced with brilliant gold paint. Gold paint is also used to decorate the box's exterior with intricate patterns; on the sides these patterns are extensively accented by aluminum paint and playing cards.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on legs. On the lid's interior Dmitriev has written the title ("Alice in Wonderland"), the year of 2010, Kholui, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work.
