Description: This beautifully shaped Kholuy box was painted by the highly talented husband and wife artistic duet of Yugeniy and Svelana Vlasovs. It is an original work that shows an episode from the Russian folk tale "Kroshechka Khavroshechka". Little Khavroshka is orphaned. She is obliged to face much hardship in her life because of her cruel stepmother and stepsisters. Khavroshka is able to overcome all obstacles with the help of her cow. In the end of the tale she marries a handsome young man.
With an abundance of detail Vlasovs give the eyes a feast of information to digest. It is hard to conceive the amount of brushstrokes they made, the amount of blending and layering, or the constant re-working of the scene to make it look perfect. The details are enhanced tremendously by the golden and silver contours illuminating each and every inch of the moment composed.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The exterior is decorated with rich and very intricate gold and silver patterns. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on legs. On the lid's interior the artists painted in gold an attractive composition that depicts Russian countryside. In the middle of this composition the artists wrote their names, a list of materials used, the title, the village name of Kholuy, the year of 2008, and the confirmation that this work is of original design.
