This large magnificent box is a creation of the prominent Kholui artist, Sergey Dmitriev. The work is called "Royal Hunt" and shows a Russian Prince hunting with a falcon accompanied by his suite.
The scene is painted in rather dark tempera paints and enlivened by lustrous gold paint that is used to enhance various details throughout the composition. The faces of all characters are expressively and distinctly painted. Their costumes reflect the fashion at the times of Ivan the Terrible (the 16th century).
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold and silver ornaments. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Kholui, and the title.
