Larisa Poturayko of Kholuy painted this exceptional lacquer box. Her style is one that amazes and dazzles the eye with fine details and frenetic movement! Her use of the icon-painting style works to her advantage as she composes very tightly drawn compositions with densely managed figures and shapes!
This work is called "Golden Autumn". It features a peasant girl lying on the grass, enjoying the fall season. The palette incorporates a great deal of pastels, while keeping earth tones like greens and browns in important positions. Gold paint is used with delicacy and great restraint so as not to drown out the main tonal play between the pastels and earth tones.
The exterior of the box is decorated with intricate gold ornamentation. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged from the top of the composition, and rests on wavy legs. It is signed and titled by the artist on the interior of the lid.
