Very interestig historical subject.Spectacular and colourful work! From the ancient time to 1960s!
In the upper left corner we can see the icon painters of 1800-1900s, the founders of Kholui style/Art. In the upper right corner we can see Holy Trinity Church at Kholui(built 1748-1750), the actual Church, one of the sightseeing view of this village.
In the left lower corner two artists came out to the plein air for sketching, in the right corner modern artists are at work in the Kholui Workshops. The icons on the floor of the Workshops tells us about the connection of modern Kholui Art with ancient Icon painting. The style of Kholui is unique, but came from traditional icon painting, close to Palekh and Mstera schools.
In the center of the composition we can see Revolutionary Troyka, with three Red horses,red carriage and Red army soldier with RED flag! Revolution in Russia in 1917-1918 has change the government, bring the Soviets to the authority, almost prohibit religion and icons. This box belongs to the Soviet Era (1966), but painted by a connoisseur of history of his village and Russia. The fact is that after the Revolution all three icon schools-Palekh, Kholui and Mstera start to produce the boxes and paint on them instead of icons.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. The edges of the lid of the box are decorated with a pattern of swirling golden filigree.
Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The box is hinged from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist's name, date 1966, title and the village of Kholui.
