Description:

This colorful scene was painted by Daniil Molodkin. It continues the artist's series of works showing fantastic creatures, living in a downsized grass world. These creatures, gnomes and dwarfs, have towns, villages, markets, shops, ports and libraries. They go to the cinema and restaurants, behaving just like people do. For instance, this scene shows a dwarf-mechanic and his invention, - a robot on wheels. At first sight one can understand that this dwarf is a mechanic, - he has the bag full of different instruments: a hammer, a screwdriver, a spanner; a ruler and a pencil are fixed to his hat; and in his hand he holds a screw. The robot is the dwarf's assistant that helps him to create different mechanisms. Its body consists of screws, gear wheels, nails, lamps, bells and other details. All around them extends the fantastic world with its bright whimsical plants and different insects.
The palette that the artist uses a wide array of blues, greens, and earthtones to convey the natural setting in the scene. He also uses purples, reds, and tones that help create the stylized atmosphere that make Daniil's compositions uniquely his own. Gold as always, is used to enhance the details in the box and to fully bring the colors to life.
The composition is framed by a line of gold paint, and then precisely painted gold scrollwork frames the scene. Gold ornamentation also wraps around the sides of the box. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on four round feet. The artist's signature and title can be found right underneath of composition.
