Description: This brilliant box was painted by the young and very talented Mstyora artist Pavel Golovanov. The scene depicted here is rather unusual for Mstyora School of lacquer painting. It is called "The Most handsome Lad in the Village" and depicts a lad hugging a girl. The girl plays balalaika (musical instrument) and cuddles up to her suitor. Nearby an old man sits on the bench and listens to a record player.
The palette consists of a combination of cool, warm, and earth-tones that all work with each other to make the balance of color harmonious. This makes it very easy for the eye to digest the visual information. Gold paint is used to detail the scene, but is used in subtle, appropriate amounts. The artist's direction of facial expression adds a great deal of personality to the scene. Looking at the old man's face it isn't difficult to guess that he listens a sad melody or song; the girl's face also shows that she likes the melody very much, whereas the lad's face shows that he is in love.
The box is made out of paper-mache from Mstera. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold and aluminum ornamentation frames the composition on the lid and the sides of the box are decorated with gold ornamentation. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The artist has written Mstera, the title, and his name on the base of the box.
