Description:

This small box has been made by A. Fortova from the village of Mstera. The colorful paintings extend on the whole its surface except its bottom and interior. It shows the Golden Fish, which is the Queen of all seas and oceans. The Golden Fish is the heroine of the Pushkin's "Tale of the Old Man and the Magic Fish". In this tale the old fisherman caught the magic golden who promised to fulfill all his wishes. The fisherman was a simple-minded man who didn't want anything but his greedy wife forced him to ask the fish to fulfill more and more wishes. In the end the fisherman's wife was punished by the magic golden fish.
Besides the Golden Fish the composition includes various underwater animals and plants: crabs, starfish, corals, shells, etc. The fish and most of the underwater animals are painted in light brown tones and richly detailed with gold metal paints. The surrounding water space is drawn in dark blue and turquoise tones.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the bottom of the box and red lacquer for the interior. The box has a hinge located to the top of the composition and rests on flat bottom. The work is signed and titled "Golden Fish" by the artist.
