Description:

Alexander Dogadin of Mstera painted this elegantly shaped box featuring a scene from the Pushkin's "Tale of the Old Man and the Magic Fish". In this tale the old fisherman caught the magic golden fish who promised to fulfill all his wishes. The fisherman was a simple-minded man who didn't want anything but his greedy wife forced him to ask the fish to fulfill more and more wishes. In the end the fisherman's wife was punished for her greediness.
In the middle of the composition we can see the fisherman's wife turned into Tsaritsa by the magic fish's sorcery. But it isn't enough for her. She wants to be the Mistress of all seas and oceans, and her poor husband is forced to ask the fish to fulfill this stupid wish.
Blue, red and brown tones dominate here. Gold paint is used to detail the scene but in minimal amounts.
The scene is outlined with a gold line, and then framed with intricate gold leafy pattern. The similar pattern but a little smaller in size wraps around the box's sides. It runs parallel to a string of white beads.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on legs. Signed and titled by A. Dogadin.
