Description: This beautiful Russian lacquer miniature was created by the talented Tatyana Strunina from the village of Mstera. A palette of rich color adds to the enchanting nature of the scene. It blooms into a mesmerizing setting, dynamic characters and imaginative architecture that is an absolute pleasure to enjoy.
The story in which this scene is taking place is "Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf". The story tells about the adventures of the Prince Ivan Tsarevich and his companion the Grey Wolf, a magician. Tsarevich saved the Wolf's cubs and the Wolf helped him in several quests: to get a fire bird, to get a horse with a golden mane, and to get a beautiful princess.
The multi-scened composition shows several events seemingly taking place simultaneously and within close proximity. This is in fact an icon painting device that disregards time and space in order to more fully tell the story. The scene depicted on the lid shows the episode when Ivan Tsarevich steals the firebird from the Tsar Afron's garden. The scenes on the box's sides show another episodes from this tale. One of them shows the Fire Bird, flying in the orchard of Ivan Tsarevich's father and filching golden apples. This bird was the reason of all Ivan Tsarevich's future adventures. After catching the Fire Bird by the order of his father, Ivan had to fulfill the other tasks: to steal the horse with a golden mane and to steal the beautiful princess, Elena the Beautiful. The other scene shows Ivan, the owner of all these three wonders, riding his friend, the Grey Wolf. The last scene shows the marriage of Ivan Tsarevich and Elena the Beautiful.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The edges of the lid and its sides are decorated with beautiful gold patterns. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed with dark red lacquer. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a small platform. The work is signed with the artists name, title and village on the base of the box.
